Ahead of a critical court hearing before an immigration judge in Louisiana that focused on whether Khalil was entitled to relief from deportation, including through asylum, Khalil met and held his newborn son for the first time. The Trump administration had sought to have the two separated by a plexiglass barrier.

A federal judge in California has blocked the Trump administration from terminating the legal statuses of international students at universities across the U.S. In the injunction, senior district judge Jeffrey S. White also prohibited the administration from arresting or detaining any foreign-born students on the bases of their immigration status while an ongoing case challenging previous terminations moves through the courts.

May 20, 2025, 7:14 PM EDTFor the second time in less than two weeks immigration lawyers have gone to federal court to try and stop the Trump Administration from deporting a small group of immigrants from the U.S. to a war-torn country not their own. Immigration attorneys told the court that at least two of their clients, from Myanmar and Vietnam, were deported Tuesday morning to South Sudan in violation of a court order, and they demanded their return.

May 19, 2025, 10:32 PM EDTColumbia University student Mahmoud Khalil’s legal team on Monday released new footage of the minutes leading up to his March arrest that they say contradicts the government’s argument that he was a flight risk, which officials had said justified his detainment without an arrest warrant. The Columbia activist who helped organize pro-Palestinian rallies on campus a year ago has been held in a detention center in Louisiana for two months.
