    Middle books of trilogies have somewhat picked up a reputation for being the textual equivalent of filler episodes, which I find unfair because some of my favorite books are trilogy middles. They’re too easily typecast as the path to get from opening to ending, from the introduction of the world to the grand finale. But middle books that are done well feel like such careful expansions, playing off of book one while also keeping a steady direction for book three.

    Ah, the legendary Middle Book Syndrome. If you’ve been in bookish circles for even a small amount of time, you’ve likely heard this term, used often to describe the second book of a trilogy. Readers bemoan it. Writers fear it. “This suffered from Middle Book Syndrome” is a phrase to accompany complaints that there was no point to the installment: nothing happened, the characters went in circles, the plot only served to get to the third book.
