A Gainesville woman working with the Alachua County Community Remembrance Program Committee has created the first digital Black Heritage Trail Map for Alachua County. The digital map will launch by early December this year along with a complete renovation of the Alachua County Truth and Reconciliation website.

Some east Gainesville neighbors are objecting to the possibility that a parking lot will be developed just a few feet from their homes. Sam Johnson is one of many who are protesting the parking lot in the development plan for an expanded and renovated Martin Luther King, Jr. Center and Citizens Field Stadium. About half of the 22-acre multipurpose field is planned to be turned into a parking lot of 1,000 parking spaces. The field is about a mile long.

Ben Guzick, a Gainesville bakery owner, is evaluating how he needs to run his business after the recent increase in Florida’s minimum wage to $12 on Sept. 30. The minimum wage will increase by $1 annually until 2026 when it reaches $15 an hour. This went into effect on Nov. 30, 2020, when Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment to increase the state’s minimum wage yearly, according to the Florida Department of Economic Development.

For the first time, the 30th National Public Lands Day was open to volunteers from the public. West of the Bass Pro Shop in Celebration Pointe, 13 volunteers participated at Lake Kanapaha Park by pulling invasive coral ardisia, a non-native plant that displaces native trees and shrubs in the forest. Volunteers sprayed themselves with bug spray, put on their gloves and sat down in the dirt to do their part to protect the land from the invasive species.
