    Chase McMullen was surrounded by a herd of runners, the air thick with anticipation. The energy at Cheadle Lake crackled; the runners hit their legs and jumped up and down. The moment the starter’s pistol went off, they were gone. A blur of black, white and orange, Chase was in motion. Chase, 15, is a sophomore at Yamhill-Carlton High School. He is on both the track and cross country teams at his high school under the guidance of Coach Rylan Larson.

    Preparing for journalism camp, I was nervous and honestly had no idea what it would be like. The only thing I knew was that I would be staying in dorms for a week and learning about journalism. I didn’t know anyone who was coming, so I was expecting to feel the typical discomfort that comes with being surrounded by strangers. I was looking forward to trying something new and meeting new people, though. When I first got here, I was a bit unenthusiastic. Quickly, though, I changed my mindset.
