13 public health programs could be eliminated or reduced in SLO County budget cuts

San Luis Obispo County is in the midst of finalizing massive budget cuts, and its health agencies are bearing the brunt of them. Of the $38 million in total proposed to be cut, $9.1 million — or 24% — is suggested to come from county health and human services departments. All in all, 13 health agency programs have been recommended to be reduced or eliminated completely.

Bruce Gibson, the longtime supervisor for District 2 in San Luis Obispo County, announced Thursday that he will not seek reelection in 2026, ending a two-decade career on the board. For nearly 20 years, Gibson has represented the Second District, stretching from the Monterey County line to the north to Morro Bay, Los Osos and parts of San Luis Obispo to the south, including the unincorporated communities of San Simeon, Harmony, Cayucos and Cambria.

Two San Luis Obispo County residents suspected of running a large-scale drug trafficking operation were arrested with nearly 12 pounds of illegal narcotics and three handguns last week. In a monthlong investigation by the Atascadero Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team, detectives tracked drug trafficking activities in the North County to a house on the 3400 block of Spring Street in Paso Robles, the Police Department said in a news release.

Two people were killed in an apparent wrong-way, head-on crash involving three cars in Nipomo on Monday, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release. At approximately 6:25 p.m., Fernando Contreras of Santa Maria was driving south on Orchard Road near Cherry Blossom Place. At the same time, Darlene Leticia Scruggs of Nipomo was driving north on Orchard, approaching Contreras, followed by Melchor David Delagarza of Nipomo, the news release said.

88-year-old SLO County bridge to close for construction through fall

The road leading to an 88-year-old San Luis Obispo County bridge will close this summer and fall while crews work to replace the structure, the SLO County Public Works Department said in a news release. The bride set for replacement spans the Jack Creek, near Jack Creek Farms north of Highway 46 in rural Templeton, approximately six miles west of Paso Robles, the Public Works Department said in the release.
