Renewed fighting broke out over the weekend between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-In-Opposition (SPLM-IO) and the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in Nagero County, Western Equatoria State, resulting in multiple casualties and civilian property losses. SPLA-IO Major General Simon Samuel Alisoromo confirmed the clashes, accusing the SSPDF of launching an unprovoked attack on their cantonment area.

South Sudanese Interior Minister Angelina Teny has said that South Sudan has a huge number of people at risk of being rendered stateless because of the influx of refugees, returnees and the internally displaced persons. Addressing reporters at the Juba International Airport after attending an annual meeting for the Executive Committee of UNHCR in Geneva, Switzerland, Teny said the meeting sought to address the crisis and the protection of refugees, the internally displaced and the returnees.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has sacked the head of national oil company Nilepet, according to a presidential decree. Managing Director Eng. Mohammed Lino Benjamin was relieved of his duties, according to a decree broadcast on state television on Thursday night. Lino had been in the job since July 10. Eng. Ayuel Ngor Kwocgor was named as new managing director, it said. The president did not give reasons for the changes at the top leadership of the government-owned oil company Nilepet.

The National Council of Ministers on Thursday entrenched the extension of the transitional period and the delay of general elections into the transitional constitution. Addressing reporters after a meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir in Juba, Cabinet Affairs Minister Dr Martin Elia Lomuro, said the amendment will not extend the tenure of all government offices, and that the Justice minister was expected to present the extension to the parliament on Friday.
