They’re finally happening. After two months of test balloons, 25% tariffs on all imported light-duty vehicles will take effect beginning April 3. At least, that's the plan as of 2:15 pm EDT on March 28. Tariffs on imported automotive parts are coming too, but not until May. (That’s because determining non-U.S. content of auto parts is pretty hard, so we’ll need a new government system to make the determination.

Can we now call electric premium three-row SUVs a “mini segment?” Why not. What started with the Tesla Model X has grown into options like the Mercedes EQS, Cadillac Escalade IQL, Cadillac Vistiq (coming soon), Lucid Gravity, Rivian R1S, and Volvo EX90. Electric premium three-row SUVs will never be the most prevalent category on a fleet selector, but they can still fit multiple fleet needs. "Premium executive transport” first comes to mind.

The 2025 Conference of Automotive Remarketing (CAR), held March 18-20 in San Diego, annually brings together consignors, auctions, dealers, and remarketing companies to discuss the state of automotive remarketing and the automotive market in general. I was only able to attend on Wednesday, but from the sessions I attended, I gleaned a host of trends in the shifting economic conditions, affordability challenges, fleet sales, and EV remarketing challenges in the used vehicle landscape.
