About a decade ago, I was hanging out with a couple of friends at Smiley’s, a dive bar in Bolinas, California, a small beach town about an hour north of San Francisco. After a few vodkas, I spotted David Brock, the author and well-known Democratic Party organizer. I had interviewed Brock years prior as Washington correspondent for The Advocate. Before long, we were at the bar, trading political stories. We chucked at how far he’d come from his days as a right-wing provocateur, landing in Bolinas.

It was the photo worth a thousand Tweets. Wearing a skinny black leather tie above tight black jeans, a smiling, shirtless Scott Wiener posed at San Francisco’s infamous Folsom Street Fair. That should have been the end of the story—another Sunday Funday in the sun—until Wiener, a popular California state senator from the Castro neighborhood, posted the image on X, eliciting howls from right-wing agitators led by the ultimate troll, Elon Musk, who just happens to own the social media site.
