    When I was in fourth grade, my Catholic school held a Scholastic Book Fair in the gym during recess. There weren't many kids there, but I wandered in because I wasn't particularly interested in playing in the yard like most of the other students. I wasn't really a "reader"; I'd read chapter books and some nonfiction fare, but nothing that really sparked my imagination.

    When one of my favorite aunts was being complimented, she used to say, "Keep talking, I'm listening!" Her line, if not her motivation, helps us enter into today's Scriptures. From Samuel to Jesus and the disciples, it's all about looking, listening and hearing, attitudes that lead to discovering who we are and are called to be. It's all about vocation: seeking and listening. Today's first reading and the Gospel illustrate two dimensions of our response to God's invitation in our lives.

    I have a long history with meditation, starting with my years in the seminary. So you might think I know what it was and how to do it. You would be partially correct. For me now, meditation is a spiritual exercise of quiet focus which sometimes generates peace, joy and love, offsetting anxiety, depression and fear. Prayer means I talk to God, and meditation implies that God has space to visit with me while I listen. That's my intention at least, even if it is not always my result.
