Prices for the rarest cognacs still lag those for Scotch whisky. The collectable market for the latter boomed during the era of ultra-low interest rates and, in any case, the whisky market is quite a bit bigger. Scotland exported £5.6 billion worth of whisky in 2023 against almost €3 billion (£2.5 billion) in annual sales for cognac, as of last month’s data. Of that, 97% of cognac is exported – 31% to China.

The fungus is attracted to the alcohol in the air – the evaporation from the brandy resting in the casks, known as the angels’ shares – and it gives the surrounding buildings a blackish appearance. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is rowing back on her plans, announced in the Budget in October, to crack down on non-doms. She was faced last week with the uncomfortable revelation that a net 10,800 millionaires left Britain last year – a 157% rise from 2023. Most of those tax exiles are heading for Italy and Switzerland, according to the data compiled by New World Wealth, an analytics firm, and investment migration advisers Henley & Partners.

The University of Louisville’s Student Organization Activity Board (SOAB) hosted its spring Recognized Student Organization (RSO) fair in the Red Barn on Jan. 21, 2025. Members of the different RSOs handed out applications for their respective organizations along with free items such as stickers, candy, and plushies of Louie the Cardinal. The Lunar Lion Dance Organization even brought out a couple of props for their display to gain a greater student interest at the event.

It’s not because this pink gem of a hotel is stashed away in the verdure of its Barbadian gardens that Cobblers Cove is so named. (Although pink and green are its signature colours.) And it’s not because, like a pirates’ cove, it is especially secret. Cobblers has been a celebrated Caribbean treasure since at least the late 1960s, when it was sold to the Godsal family, the current owners. And, as far as I’m aware, it has never been the seaside repository of shoe repairers either.

Are vintage Ladybird books valuable?

These days you can find Ladybird books exploring everything from the mid-life crisis to hangovers – examples from a spoof series released by Penguin, which bought the publisher in 1998, to capitalise on the nostalgia and resurgent interest in the series of children’s books. There doesn’t yet seem to be a Ladybird Book of Investing. It would be fun to follow the adventures of the original child protagonists, Peter and Jane, as they pore over balance sheets and the latest earnings reports.
