While some revel in the action-packed bustle of Hammertown (think 100,000 off-roaders amped up high-octane fuel and Monster energy drinks), some of us prefer to escape to dust-free starlit nights and the camaraderie of friends around a quite campfire. The OVR Outpost was just such a haven.

    A few years ago I drove a Ram Rebel 1500 from California to Tuktoyaktuk, a small Inuit settlement on the frozen shores of the Arctic Ocean. For three weeks I relished the sweet timbre of the 5.7-liter Hemi as I navigated 7,000 miles of snow-covered pavement, the desolate Dempster Highway, and the famous Mackenzie River ice road.

    The Canning Stock Route, Pamir Highway, and Road of Bones are some of the most highly acclaimed off-road routes in the world, but while traveling in Botswana 20 years ago I met two gents in a Defender 110 who asked, “Do you know about the Rubicon… have you driven it?”When I shared that I live in California and “The Con” was just two hours from my home, they nearly fell over. Being that I’d grown up nearby, the Rubicon was a natural venue for learning how to navigate technical terrain.

    We starred at each other for what seemed like eternity. Neither made a sound, blinked, or raised an eyebrow, his dull gaze manifesting an existence of toil and servitude. Though face-to-face with a resolute adversary in a no-win stare-down, I knew I’d be the only one to walk away alive. It felt like hours, but was probably less than 30 seconds before a woman entered from a dark hallway at the end of the room. I looked up, back at my antagonist, blinked, and my focus was gone.
