It's lovely that the French Classics attract big fields but the results are often draw-affected and perhaps it's only the outside chance of gaining some prestige that saves those races from the kind of sulky, post-declaration withdrawals of those drawn wide that can happen at Chester. Camille Pissarro couldn't make it happen from stall 15 at Longchamp last month but things worked out much better for him from the innermost berth in the Prix du Jockey Club.

What does a horse have to do? Anmaat is a star but it's taking a puzzling amount of time for him to be widely recognised as such, with so many telescopes pointing elsewhere. Over the last three seasons, he's put up a single disappointing effort. The rest of the time, he's either been first or second, but he seems not to have accumulated many fans, judging by the way he was allowed to drift out to 40-1 before landing the Champion Stakes in October.
