Late last summer, while standup paddling, I watched a fisherman glide up atop a seafoam green multihulled paddleboard. Though pushed along by a trolling motor, he was gracious enough to stop for a quick overview of his 14-foot Live Watersports L4 Expedition. The dude was armed: battery box, tackle box, a Yeti cooler for a seat, a side track/rail system to hold rods, a cupholder, and a paddle.

When I stepped aboard Pardo’s new GT75 at the Cannes Yachting Festival with a posse of fellow marine journalists, a company rep in the cockpit described the yacht as “a luxury villa at sea.” Hyperbolic prose? Sure. But actually, it didn’t take long to conclude that this description of the Italian builder’s new flagship was essentially spot on. She’s sleek, modern, Italian, comfortable—and very pretty.

Back in the late 1970’s, naval architect Ben Ostlund was commissioned to design a raised deck, fiberglass-hulled boat that paid tribute to the gorgeous wooden cruisers of the 1920’s. The result was the stunning Fairchild Scout 30. This remarkable small live-aboard is owned by Russell and Nancy Bourne of Jupiter, Florida.

When Bill and Bonny Morong set up to restore the 1971 58-foot Trumpy, Somerset, they knew they’d have their work cut out for them, but the true extent of the work wouldn’t become apparent until she was hauled out. Her hull was so compromised that, “She was hogging just sitting on blocking, even though she was blocked very well,” said Bill. Meet Bill and Bonny and take in the jaw-dropping concours-quality restoration they performed on a truly historic vessel.

In 2020, Edward Cox dreamed an impossible dream. The owner of Wisconsin’s Streblow Custom Boats, Cox was no stranger to serious builds, but when he decided to refurbish a 67-foot 1970 Burger, he and his captain Terry Harris took it to the next level. “It just hit me as the most beautiful boat I’d ever seen,” said Cox. Step aboard with The King and I’s crew for a tour of a one-of-a-kind, four-year-long restoration. Thanks for watching!Visit Website...

When you think of Lake Tahoe, what comes to mind? Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing? Towering, pine-forested slopes dropping into one of the clearest alpine lakes on the planet? Well, what about one of the most stunning yachts ever built? Probably not—unless you’re familiar with a 1939 Hacker Craft called Thunderbird. Thunderbird was the brainchild of George Whittell. Born in 1881, Whittell was an heir to the fortunes of the family that created the Pacific Gas & Electric Company.

While we love roaming the slips and doing dockside reviews at the boat shows, sea trials are where we really love to put our energy. That’s why when the Cannes Yachting Festival rolled around, I was happy to not only get to put the new Absolute 70 Navetta under a dockside magnifying glass, but to take this newest star in a now eight-boat line out where she belongs. Let’s start with the basics. This is, quite simply, a damn nice boat.
