Mad about your ever-rising electric bills? Now you have a chance to do something about it. After elections were delayed for years because of a lawsuit, Georgia voters will soon pick two out of the five members of the Public Service Commission, which regulates Georgia Power, among other duties. Primaries are Tuesday, June 17, and early voting runs through Friday, June 13 at the Athens-Clarke County Elections Department downtown and the ACC Library.

Former Athens-Clarke County auditor Stephanie Johnson took her oath of office as commissioner Jan. 7 in front of a large crowd who celebrated the occasion as historic. Johnson’s swearing-in marked the first time in Athens history when half of the city council or commission seats were held by people of color. Alvin Sheats, a former ACC commissioner and the president of the Athens NAACP, expressed his joy during public comment about finally achieving equal representation for the Black community.

“Plan B” emergency contraceptive pills are a safe and reasonably effective way to prevent pregnancy when other means of birth control have failed, making them an important part of student life at the University of Georgia. Yet, when students involved in reproductive justice efforts pass out free condoms and Plan B pills on campus, they say they regularly face harassment from anti-abortion students who mistakenly believe these pills can cause abortions.
