Since 2011, Charlie Brooker's sci-fi/horror/comedy/whatever-you-want-it-to-be anthology series "Black Mirror" has had a firm hold on pop culture, a fact that was only heightened when the series made the leap to Netflix in season 3. But a curious thing happened: as the real world grew increasingly more surreal and strange, the far-out concepts of "Black Mirror" struggled to keep up.

Netflix releases a lot of original material — or "content," as they'd unfortunately call it — so it's very easy for things to get lost in the shuffle (and sometimes, originals will even vanish from the streamer or just get canceled way too quickly). If I'm being honest, I can also say a large percentage of these originals can be altogether forgettable and disposable. Which is why when something truly remarkable comes along, it's worth highlighting and propping up.

True crime documentaries and docuseries continue to thrive, especially on Netflix. While the subjects and topics at hand may be different, almost all of these docs share a familiar formula: there will be talking head interviews cut in between both archival news footage and stylish dramatic recreations of events.
