    The Ontario government has announced the craft cider makers in the province will get equal tax treatment. The provincial budget announced on May 15 included a change to how Ontario’s craft cider makers are taxed. Starting on August 1, the government will harmonize the taxes levied on craft cider with those levied on craft beer. The markup on cider at the LCBO will be reduced from 60.6 per cent to 32 per cent. This change applies to all retail channels and licensee sales.

    Grey Highlands council wants to look at ways to reduce litter and garbage tossed onto local roads. Since 2019, Scott has done 16 different garbage collections on local roads. He has collected more than 1,645 items, of which, 327 were beer/liquor related. “It’s a sad reflection of humanity’s thoughts on this,” Scott told council. On his way to Markdale the morning of the meeting, Scott stopped briefly to pick up trash found on Grey County Road 30.

    Grey Highlands chief administrative office Karen Govan has received a special award. At its meeting on May 21, Grey Highlands council celebrated Govan’s 20th year in public service. Mayor Paul McQueen started the meeting by presenting Govan with a pin marking her 20th year in municipal government. Govan received the Long Service Recognition Award by the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA). She has spent 20 years in municipal government and 10 years in senior leadership roles.
