The Taliban’s quest for legitimacy is gaining momentum after Pakistan upgraded diplomatic ties last month, promoting its charge d’affaires in Kabul to the rank of ambassador and accepting the Taliban’s counterpart in Islamabad. At the time, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the Pakistan-Afghanistan relationship was on a “positive trajectory” and that the move was a positive step towards “enhanced engagement” in the areas of trade, security and counterterrorism.

The federal election is still some weeks away, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Labor appear increasingly confident of winning a second term. The latest polling from YouGov shows Labor has extended its two-party lead over the Coalition 52.5% to 47.5%. This was backed by Newspoll and Resolve, which has Labor at 52 and 53.5 respectively. According to Newspoll, the Coalition’s primary vote has fallen to 35%, lower than its primary vote before it lost the 2022 federal election.

India continues to get closer to the Taliban, with reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will allow the regime in Afghanistan to appoint a new envoy for its embassy in New Delhi. This comes on the heels of the first high-level meeting between India and the Taliban in January, with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and acting Taliban ‘Foreign Minister’ Amir Khan Muttaqi meeting in Dubai to discuss strengthening political and economic ties, and providing humanitarian aid.
