You know how some people are really easy to shop for and others basically impossible? According to my wife (and the mother of my two-year-old daughter), I fall fully into the latter category. I may be great when it comes to advice on the best Father’s Day gifts for triathletes, but when it comes to myself, I struggle mightily. Maybe it’s because I do get to test a lot of awesome tri gear, so of course I’m picky.

The Garmin Forerunner 970 has two major hardware upgrades – a built-in flashlight and a speaker/microphone – and a small handful of software/platform updates to help dial in training gains, but also a big leap in price from the previous model. When Garmin released the last version of the Forerunner 9xx series – the Forerunner 965 – way back in spring of 2023, I wasn’t exactly blown away.

Despite a relatively young career at long-course triathlon, Youri Keulen (NED) has already made a big impact. Beginning with a big top-10 finish at the 2023 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, Keulen finished off that season with two wins at Challenge events in October. But in 2024 Keulen really made his mark with a win at Singapore T100 in April and a solid middle-distance season with a second-place finish at 70.3 Les Sables D’Olonne and two top 10s at T100 events in July and September.

With a collection of short-course medals, three 70.3 wins, and five major PTO wins on her resume, all eyes are on Australia’s Ashleigh Gentle at this weekend’s San Fransisco T100 event. Though she notably struggled at the 2024 edition of the San Fransisco T100, she’ll be looking to improve on that seventh-place finish with a much stronger bike than we saw last year (ninth fastest split on the day in 2024).
