On Friday afternoon, heading into the weekend, the U.S. Supreme Court told the Trump administration that the non-department Department of Government Efficiency can more or less do what it wants. In a pair of orders on the shadow docket, the court’s conservatives — over the objection of the liberal justices — allowed DOGE to access individualized, sensitive Social Security data for all Americans even as they prevented Americans from being able to access information about DOGE.

On Thursday morning, the Democratic appointees to the U.S. Supreme Court each authored a majority decision for the court in one of the more significant cases of the term. These were not 5-4 decisions, however, where Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson managed to convince two of the Republican appointees to join them. To the contrary, all three decisions were authored for a unanimous court.

A federal judge has found that the Trump administration’s removal of people from the United States on March 15 under the purported authority of President Donald Trump’s invocation of a wartime power, sending them to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, violated their due process rights because they were not given the chance to challenge the action.

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the federal government to continue providing transgender people in federal prisons with hormone therapy and social accommodations like clothing that they would have been allowed before the Trump administration tried to end such policies.
