Beneath our oceans' surfaces lies a complex tapestry of marine habitats which are increasingly impacted by human exploitation and climate change. Many countries have ambitious targets for the management of marine protected environments (MPAs), but effectiveness has been limited by conventional monitoring methods. Historical observations have been conducted by divers navigating predefined transects to collect downward video recordings for manual review.

Efficient wide-area optical exploration with Image Mapping is the key to uncovering the ocean’s mysteries and is vital for documenting and managing the habitats, history, and critical infrastructure that we all rely upon. One of the main challenges with observing the ocean is the trade-off between coverage and resolution in subsea instruments. While sonars can capture data across large areas, they often do not have the resolution required for gathering quantifiable and actionable data.

The ocean sector is rapidly evolving as green energy demand fuels incredible growth in offshore wind. It is becoming evident that the technologies and methodologies historically used in the offshore industry to monitor and maintain assets must also evolve to address new inspection challenges and tighter cost constraints. Moreover, a global pandemic has catalyzed survey operators to begin adopting approaches that enable remote operations and reduce reliance on human factors.
