Retail crime is becoming “endemic” in Scotland, with some businesses experiencing thefts from their stores every day, shop owners have warned. Industry representatives told 1919 that some businesses have stopped routinely reporting shoplifting incidents as they are increasingly sceptical of any action being taken. The comments come in the wake of a Police Scotland report which warned of a huge rise in the number of young teenagers accused of shoplifting.

Scotland’s key public health agency could be at risk of a cyber-attack due to a lack of investment in digital security and other safety measures, its board has been told. Public Health Scotland (PHS) warned that such an attack could lead to “significant and immediate disruption to our ability to operate”, as well as financial losses.

Up to 300,000 people in Scotland are at risk of falling victim to loan sharks, who are adapting their tactics to prey on those hit by the cost-of-living crisis, new figures from consumer watchdogs reveal. Research from the Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit (SIMLU) found that around 7 per cent of the adult population has come across a loan shark either in their community or online.

National advice agency Advice Direct Scotland is urging households to check if they could qualify for support while pupils are at home during the October break. Households normally eligible for free school meals during term-time should automatically receive payments of £2.50 per day, per child during the holiday.
