I recently got the opportunity to see Rhiannon Giddens' Old Time Revue at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. A running joke through the night was the number of ways they could slip plugs for their merch into the banter. But, later in the night, Giddens got a bit more serious about the subject, reminding attendees that with record sales practically dead and streaming payouts notoriously low, merchandise sales are the primary income source for most touring musicians.

So much of American roots music is steeped in Celtic tradition. As British and Irish settlers came to America in the 18th and 19th centuries, they brought their favorite folk songs with them. As these songs passed down through generations, they became the Appalachian songs so loved today. “The Wexford Girl” became “The Knoxville Girl,” as those singers adapt it to their new home. Portland-based Ashleigh Flynn & the Riveters first came to my attention back in 2018 with their self-titled debut album, a honky tonk rocker that showed a band on the rise. A major challenge of crowdfunding is that you’re selling something that doesn’t exist yet. You’re selling the idea of an album or a movie or a book in hopes of raising the money to make that idea a reality. Raising money ahead of the creation of a project provides a chance to market a look at the making of the product as a backer perk or perks.

As with last month’s column, I open this month not with a campaign for a new album (though those will come) but with crowdfunding campaigns of a more personal nature. The first is a GoFundMe campaign for country blues musician Justin Golden. Golden was diagnosed with Stage Four of a rare cancer in January and has been in the hospital fighting it since.
