The legendary Kawasaki Z1 had a little brother, the Z2. (A better behaved little brother, no doubt.) You’d be hard pressed to tell these Zeds apart: pretty much everything was the same on both bikes, apart from the internals of that glorious DOHC engine. Kawasaki dropped the capacity from 903 to 746cc, but the Z2 motor was carefully designed to mimic the feel of its bigger sibling. And the output was a very respectable (albeit ‘claimed’) 69bhp at 9000rpm.

Ducati’s Hypermotard and Streetfighter have reignited interest in the streetfighter category. So we’re now seeing some interesting conversions based on supersport bikes, such as the Suzuki GSX-R. The mean-lookin’ Gixxer above is a 1993 model transformed by Xavi Garcia from Barcelona, with help from his friends at Streetfighter Spain. The detailing is professional, with countless tweaks: these include a modified subframe, new seat cowl and KTM front mask, all professionally painted.

A new build from Kaffeemaschine is always worth looking out for. Hamburg-based Axel Budde designs some of the world’s best custom Moto Guzzis, and his eighth creation doesn’t disappoint. The bike was built for Guillaume Bureau, who lives in Switzerland. “He wanted a pure cafe racer,” says Budde, “with a moderate riding position and space for a pillion too.” The donor bike was a Le Mans Mk II; Budde gave it a complete mechanical overhaul before handing it over to HTMoto for performance tuning.

Sometimes a motorcycle built purely for function can have beautiful form as well. This vintage 50cc racer from the Spanish Derbi factory is packing just 15hp, but it could reach an extraordinary 200 kph (124 mph) on the track. And as you can see, it also looks good standing still. It’s a ‘Angel Nieto Replica’, a short run of bikes built in 1973 to honor the success of Spain’s leading motorcycle racer.
