    AMES, Iowa – Forestry has been a passion for Emma Kerns for about as long as she can remember. She grew up on her family’s crop and cattle farm in Delaware County, helping with farm chores and helping take care of the family forest. For the past two years, she was manager of the Stephens State Forest, in south central Iowa. On Sept. 23, she began a new role as a field forestry specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – working closely with a seven-county region in northeast Iowa.

    AMES, Iowa – Keeping Iowans safe in the outdoors is the goal behind a new series of podcast episodes airing on the Habitat University podcast. The “Habitat Safety Miniseries” will cover topics such as prescribed fire safety, pesticide safety, heavy equipment safety, as well as chainsaw safety.

    AMES – Small farms and food entrepreneurs can apply for grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to help reimburse costs related to growth and expansion. Known as the Business Builder Grants, the $3.7 million in funding is made available through the Heartland Regional Food Business Center – a six-state organization that includes Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

    By Chris KickVisitors to this year’s Farm Progress Show near Boone can expect to see a wide variety of displays inside the Iowa State University exhibit, located on the corner of Seventh Street and Central Avenue. A miniature Iowa State University football field showcasing turfgrass, vegetables growing on water and hand-held apps that can identify insects and weeds will all be a part of this year’s display.
