Across southwest Houston, celebrations such as Bollywood performances, bazaars and poetry competitions are planned for early April as Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Though many Muslims choose to enjoy private parties at home, complete with food, family and friends, mosques and community groups across the Bayou City have worked to organize activities to foster a sense of excitement and community to commemorate one of the two major Muslim holidays.

Several Houston Police Department command stations offer a free Police Explorers program for students ages 14 through 20 who are interested in exploring a career in policing as well as improving their life skills. The Southeast Command Station at 8300 Mykawa Road in the Hobby area is one such hub for the program. It’s been revitalized thanks to a $12,000 grant from the Hobby Area Management District.

The 1940 Air Terminal Museum, an architectural and historical treasure on the west side of Hobby Airport, has a relatively new executive director with a new approach to the museum’s exhibits. “The main thing that’s been changed is that we now have temporary exhibit space,” said Executive Director Maggie Brown.

Some people baked bread during the pandemic to pass time and treat their families. Camille Haynes started making ice cream. While few people probably opened bakeries based on their bread alone, family and friends loved Camille’s ice cream so much that the dietitian — yes, that’s right, it’s a dietitian-made ice cream — and her husband, who formerly worked in oil and gas, decided to write up a business plan for a new ice cream shop during the height of COVID-19 infections in 2020.

Katashia DeWalt loves a challenge — almost as much as she loves cakes, cookies, cupcakes and confections. Growing up, she was the only one in her family who didn’t bake. As an adult, that all changed. Not only did DeWalt challenge herself to learn the skill on her own, but she also turned it into a business. In 2012, DeWalt opened her custom-baked business, Delectably Naughty Sweets, with her best friend. Before going into baking, DeWalt worked in banking.
