This year, Memorial Day kind of snuck up on me. Other years, when I was more in touch with the milvet community and anxious to get the word out about I Ain’t Marching Anymore, I thought about Memorial Day a lot, and even wrote about it in a 2015 op-ed piece timed to the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two:Created after the Civil War as “Decoration Day” — for the flowers decorating graves — Memorial Day tends to evoke memories of some very specific losses and of related acts of heroism.

Tomorrow is, first declared in 1982 by European objectors to compulsory military service. The day’s meaning has has since broadened to cover each service member’s right to follow their conscience. And CCW, Veterans For Peace, Center on Conscience and War and Refuser Solidarity Network are hosting “Voices of Conscience” for the day.
