Trends come and go in wine, just as they do in fashion. If the 1990s were about gleaming stainless steel in the winery and vineyards as immaculately coiffed as a prize poodle, so the shift of the last ten to fifteen years has been back towards something less controlled. In the winery, it means old oak and natural ferments; in the fields, it’s more unruly vines, vegetation in between the rows and – crucially – the absolute minimum of (or even zero) spraying.

It’s not that long ago that visits used to be largely of the ‘phone ahead, cross your fingers and hope for the best’ variety. Now the vast majority of producers are open for tastings and tours, while websites make booking a doddle. It’s safe to say, however, that not all visits are created equal.
