BACK in the dark days before the yoke of Labour and Tory mediocrity had lost its grip on Scottish politics, one of the last salvos was fired by then Labour first minister Jack McConnell – or Baron McConnell of Glenscorrodale, as fans of the House of Lords will now know him. The “do less, better” message was launched by McConnell when he became first minister in November 2001 in the aftermath of the resignation of his predecessor, Henry McLeish.

If a council can have a referendum about water, why can't a government about independence asks Chris McEleny IN the bowels of the Treasury department in our imperial capital there is a drain hatch which, if opened, allows you to see the River Fleet flowing underneath the mighty building. The Fleet is the largest of London’s subterranean rivers, all of which today contain foul water for treatment.

IN the early hours after the General Election result I sat in the studio of the BBC at Pacific Quay and listened to the newly re-elected Labour MP for Rutherglen, Michael Shanks, talk about how there was no money left. With one hand he said the Scottish Government should be spending more money on health, on transport and everything else but on the other hand there was no extra money to give to Scotland to actually do this.
