It’s kind of like the Olympics of cybersecurity, and the University of Nevada, Reno has two top competitors.
The International Cybersecurity Challenge (ICC), organized by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, runs Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 in Santiago, Chile, and will bring together teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Oceania. The United States and Canada each field a single team, and Computer Science & Engineering grad student Lloyd Gonzales is on the 30-member 2024 U.S. Cyber Team.

Cyberattacks in the United States numbered more than 2,300 last year, with more than 340 million victims, according to the 2023 Annual Data Breach Report by the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center. Attacks take many forms, from phishing to distributed denial of service attacks, and can cost companies millions. Potential financial losses from cyberattacks last year exceeded $12.5 billion, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s 2023 Internet Crime Report.

The University of Nevada, Reno is part of a new Department of Defense (DOD) Center of Excellence to facilitate collaboration between military and academic researchers studying artificial intelligence in modern warfare.
A DOD grant funds the new center, called CREDIT+: Advancing Data Analysis for Mission-Critical Applications in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.

A new degree program in industrial engineering — one the fastest-growing engineering fields and the only program of its kind in Nevada — launched this fall and already is attracting student interest.
Students like Dylan Graf, a freshman from Oregon whose interests range from track and field and photography to engineering. Like many first-year students, she wasn’t sure what degree program to pick, but a meeting with Engineering advisor Hadia Kalsoon got her thinking about industrial engineering.
