I am also a co-founder of an educational consultancy, Akomawt Educational Initiative, as well as a museum professional and a children’s book author, among other things. In celebration of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, which runs April 21-27, Grand County Library District would like to highlight some of the people behind the scenes and acknowledge the hard work they do for us in libraries across Grand County. In remembrance of John Hughes, who left our world in February 2024, we are grateful for the many times he touched our lives. As a library district volunteer, John facilitated our Great Decisions foreign policy discussion group.

Hirahara starts by discussing how college students Yuji Ichioka and Emma Gee coined the term Asian American in 1968; she also defines the phrase Pacific Islanders but notes that the book doesn’t cover those with Central and Western Asian heritage. She goes on to explore various identities within the AAPI communities, as well as U.S. cities with large populations of each group, such as Springdale, Arkansas, home to half of the U.S.’s Marshallese population.

The upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, is a celestial event that has captivated the attention of many. This natural phenomenon not only offers a unique opportunity for scientific observation and education but also serves as a communal experience that brings people together. Last October, over 400 people attended Grand County Library District’s viewing parties that were held at various locations. In April, the moon will once again pass between the Earth and the sun.

We love the collections of books, DVDs, CDs, and Library of Things that fill requests for information and entertainment and make our hearts sing.
