Elijah vs. the prophets of Baal is one of my favorite Old Testament accounts. It’s also my favorite Bible story to tell. Many years ago, I volunteered for a week at Woodland Christian Camp and taught that story five or six times and had a blast every time. What happened after that account is also remarkable. A New York Times feature from earlier this week caught my eye on Friday. The piece describes an idyllic neighborhood that sounds like something out of a movie. “Named after an adjacent lake, its residents compare it to a fairy-tale village: Little peaked-roof cottages with wood shutters are built into a dense green forest crisscrossed by mossy paths,” writes Sally McGrane. “Whole swaths are carless. Children play in the gardens, while dogs run free on a sloping meadow.

I guess I should start this column with an admission: as a Georgia Bulldog, I loathe the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. They’re not necessarily our biggest rival, but they’re our in-state little brother, which makes it fun to dunk on them. There’s a reason the rivalry has earned the nickname “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” Tech fans are insufferable, too, because they let us live rent-free in their heads all year long. Third-year head coach Brent Key might be the real estate tycoon of Georgia Tech.

Few things are more insufferable than snobbery. Whether it involves food or drink, entertainment choices, or education, a snob can ruin the fun for everybody, especially when he lords his superiority over you with condescension. We recently saw this from an open letter in the Financial Times from a group of political scientists opposing President Donald Trump’s actions against Harvard.
