    Following successful trials involving 10 local councils operating car parks, the long-heralded National Parking Platform (NPP) is being rolled out in an effort to simplify the parking experience for drivers. The Department for Transport (DfT) has commissioned the British Parking Association trade body to take forward development of the platform “at no cost to the taxpayer”, following liaison with major parking app operators such as RingGo, JustPark and PayByPhone.

    With the May Bank Holiday and the start of half term in many parts of the country almost upon us, the RAC is predicting huge numbers of cars on the road this weekend. Working with transport analyst INRIX, the motoring organisation reckons almost 18 million road trips are being planned for the Bank Holiday weekend, with the worst traffic chaos likely to be on Friday 23 May and Saturday 24, with 3.4 million trips expected to be made by car on both days.

    Autonomous or self-driving cars have been on the roads of the UK for several years as part of various technical trials, but always with a safety driver sitting behind the wheel ready to take command in an emergency. Now it has been revealed that the first ‘unmanned’ driverless cars won’t appear until the second half of 2027 at the earliest - a year later than the date promised by the last government.
