They do it because 80 years ago today, this province in northwest Italy was liberated from fascism by British and Canadian forces. The King has spoken of his concern for younger generations who are growing up in a world which, at times, resembles the 1930s. In a historic address to the Italian Parliament, Charles spoke about the bonds which connect the UK and Italy and warned that “peace must never be taken for granted”. It’s the first time a British monarch has been invited to speak to a joint session of the upper and lower houses of the parliament in Rome.

The most iconic sights of Rome are on the itinerary for King Charles and Queen Camilla as their state visit to Italy formally got underway on Tuesday. At a time when the world stage has rarely been more chaotic, the two heads of state of the UK and Italy are meeting following a ceremonial welcome. When we filmed Queen Camilla on Thursday morning, everything looked very normal.
