Since the end of the Second World War, the British flag has been flown inside the town hall in Ravenna and the Canadian flag. They do it because 80 years ago today, this province in northwest Italy was liberated from fascism by British and Canadian forces. It was just weeks before VE day was declared and the vicious regimes in Rome and Berlin were starting to fall.

The King has spoken of his concern for younger generations who are growing up in a world which, at times, resembles the 1930s. In a historic address to the Italian Parliament, Charles spoke about the bonds which connect the UK and Italy and warned that “peace must never be taken for granted”. It’s the first time a British monarch has been invited to speak to a joint session of the upper and lower houses of the parliament in Rome.

The most iconic sights of Rome are on the itinerary for King Charles and Queen Camilla as their state visit to Italy formally got underway on Tuesday. At a time when the world stage has rarely been more chaotic, the two heads of state of the UK and Italy are meeting following a ceremonial welcome. King Charles and the Italian President Sergio Mattarella are holding discussions at the Quirinal Palace in the centre of Rome.

When we filmed Queen Camilla on Thursday morning, everything looked very normal. A routine royal engagement to the film set of the ITV drama Trigger Point and, having been one of the reporters at the event, neither the Queen nor her staff looked rattled to me. But we now know that it was around this time that the King was having to make an unscheduled trip to hospital. He has regular cancer treatment.
