    I was fortunate to grow up in a house full of artwork. My grandfather, an eager sketcher since his days as an Allied soldier captured by the Germans during World War 2, took up painting in his retirement, producing a series of landscapes and still life studies, in watercolours and oils, that adorned our walls.  They are well executed, but of course technical accomplishment is not what matters here.

    I’m a writer. I write for money. I write for pleasure (not including emails). Writing gives me a challenge, a sense of meaning, a purpose. Part of my job, until recently, was teaching people how to write — or how to think by writing. This also meant teaching people how to read properly. For a decade or two, another unpleasant sub-activity of my day job as a university professor was figuring out whether my students had actually written what they presented as their writing.

Ibsen’s characters reject broken marriages and stifling social conventions, seeking to free themselves from the constraints of bourgeois propriety.
