Nottinghamshire were 90-0 at lunch as Slater and Haseeb Hameed frustrated the visitors but Yorkshire hit back as George Hill and Dan Moriarty each took two wickets and Jack White and Will O’Rourke one apiece. Lewis said that Yorkshire are well in the game and was pleased with how they kept plugging away. “I think it was a proper day for us today,” reflected the Australian.

A delayed visa forced the Pakistan batsman to miss the first of what would have been two appearances in the County Championship to go with four in the T20 Blast. It never rains, and all that. The first day of a major Test series is like the early hours of Christmas Day, after Santa has retreated back up the chimney, having left behind his mysterious presents. What does this package contain, or that box hold? Will it be socks for little Johnny, or the Scalextric set that he’d specifically asked for? The first day of this Test series, with India scoring 359-3 after being sent into bat, was about as far away from Christmas in terms of the calendar and temperature as is possible to get.
