In Part 1 we saw that our thought life is very important. We continue looking at negative thinking in this part. We mentioned self-pity and blaming and there are two other things that I’d like you to think about. 3. Unwillingness to ChangeThis more or less follows from the first two categories. Once you immerse yourself in self-pity and once you discover that you are a victim, the logical conclusion is that you can’t or won’t change.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football team is a college football team in the US that plays at the University of Notre Dame in a place called South Bend, Indiana. The team plays at the big Notre Dame stadium. It’s got a capacity of nearly 78,000. Very impressive. Well, let me tell you what happened one day to one of their young players. He was part of the Notre Dame team and he had to appear in court actually as a witness to a civil suit.

You sometimes think back to the yesterdays of your life. I think we all do that from time to time, but guess what, the past is the past, you can’t change it. No matter how much you want to go back and change what’s happened, you can’t. You may want to blame somebody, and you know that passing the blame will really not help you change anything.

We’re talking about mending a broken heart, the theme I started in Part 1. I said that lots of people go through pain, and I think it’s an important thing to sometimes reflect on the true meaning of life and the greatest opportunity of all to draw close to God. It is also an opportunity to learn empathy toward others who are going through the same things. You cannot do all of these things if you try to ignore the pain.

They say time heals all wounds. But what about the wounds that people can’t see? We can’t go to the doctor and say, “I have a broken heart, can you fix it?” So who can we go to when we have a broken heart? Is there anyone who cares? Psalm 147:3 (NIV) says: “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds”. Many of us have hidden wounds:We can be hurt by the prejudices of our society, or by colleagues in school or at work. We can be scarred by the abusive behaviour of our own family.

It’s no secret that the world is in a state of turmoil. Every day there’s another headline about some new act of violence or hatred. And it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the bad news. We feel like, what can I do to make a difference? It can be quite depressing, but there is something we can do, and that is to choose kindness. It may not seem much at first, but choosing to be kind to our fellow man will make a difference.

Have you ever been in a situation when you feel hatred towards another person? It’s a very personal question, I know, but today I’d like to have a look at this topic. It’s something that we don’t talk about but some people have—like Richard Nixon, one-time President of the United States, who once said, “Always remember others may hate you, but those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself”. Maybe he was talking from his own experience—I don’t know—but it’s true.
