In Part 1, I talked about us just wanting our fair share. When Jesus spoke to a man that had the question, he gave the story about a rich man who was satisfied with the increase of his possessions, not realising that his death was near—this is in Luke 12. There is also the story of a rich young ruler from Mark 10. He too stepped out of the crowd, to speak to Jesus. “Good teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life? What? Tell me.

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression “there are no atheists in foxholes” – it was said by a World War 2 journalist Ernie Pyle who saw a number of soldiers in life and death situations, and he was convinced that at a time when soldiers faced death, they turned to God. The atheists say “no, not true”. But I have a feeling that Ernie Pyle was right. What goes through your mind when faced with the prospect of death?

Talking again about the power of our words, and the big lesson, a simple one really, is learn to listen well when communicating with others. Stephen Covey wrote the book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and in it he talks about the habit of listening with the aim of really trying to understand. We call it active listening. A friend of mine is now retired from the ministry and has time to reflect on his very interesting life. He tells how many years ago he was attending lectures at a university. His lecturer was an aggressive atheist, and each time he spoke he included some critical reference to the church. He had no time for God. Didn’t believe in God. My friend Neil takes opportunities like these to share his faith. One day he walked into the lecturer’s office and wanted to talk.

We sometimes call it “a falling out”. A serious disagreement between two friends that results in breakup of that friendship. Always a most unfortunate situation. But it happens. It may have happened to you. Words may be spoken in the heat of the moment and, before you know it, you’re no longer on speaking terms. It can happen as quickly as that.

Louis Armstrong, maybe you’re a fan of Louis Armstrong, sang many great songs. And one of them was all about living and being part of a wonderful world. And really what he was singing about is the declaration, (he was quite right) – we do live in a wonderful world. Here was the great Christian advocate, GK Chesterton, and he was once asked what he would miss most if he were an atheist. And he replied straight away, ‘Well, if I was an atheist, I’d miss having someone to say thank you too‘.
