A man was charged after he fell asleep behind the wheel of a tractor trailer and crashed near an elementary school in Morganton Tuesday, according to police. John Elton Mayes, 33, of Cordova, Tennessee, was charged with careless and reckless driving and failure to maintain lane control, according to information from the Morganton Department of Public Safety.

Monday night’s meeting of the Burke County Board of Education put the new elementary school in the eastern end of the county at the forefront. Board members unanimously approved buying two pieces of land for $675,000 off Third Street and U.S. Highway 70 in Hildebran to house a new elementary school that will combine Hildebran and Icard elementary schools. Keith Lawson, finance director for the district, said the two parcels would be about 14 acres combined to build a new elementary school.

A Nebo man has been charged in connection with a wildfire that has burned 1,331 acres in Brunswick County since May 2. Bobby Max Lowery, 48, of Nebo, was cited with violating North Carolina General Statute 14-140.1, according to the North Carolina Forest Service. The general statute makes it an infraction to burn brush, grass or other materials where property could be threatened without keeping a close watch on the fire.

The low rumble of more than a dozen motorcycles and the flashing lights of emergency vehicles escorted the body of a fallen firefighter through Morganton on the afternoon of May 7. Longtime Oak Hill firefighter and law enforcement officer Rex "Sput" Powell was laid to rest at El Bethel Baptist Church, escorted by a procession of law enforcement officers, fire engines, family and friends, including his motorcycle club, Blue Knights MC XXIII. Powell died in a car wreck on May 1. He was 67.
