Using The Last of Us as an example, last week, I talked about the Monomyth and why we need to understand the nature of stories and their structure to push for a new way forward. Because at the rate we’re going with our ever-shortening attention spans, entertainment is heading towards something more aligned with Gen-Alpha’s Skibidi toilet. Just hopefully, not as shitty.

What happens when an unstoppable Xenomorph meets an immovable Ellen Ripley? Surrealism and sexuality meets feminism. These might not be the first themes that come to mind when thinking about the Alien franchise, but they’re there, pulsing beneath the surface like the walls of an infested hive. We’re here to talk about The Last of Us, but also, stress the need for why this column exists in the first place. Here are my two reasons. In January, The Beat reported the story of the sexual misconduct accusations on Neil Gaiman. It was a difficult topic to report on and one that the team diligently summarized well. A recent report from Variety, likewise, also came out stating that Gaiman is disputing the claim by providing text messages as evidence to the contrary. Ultimately, the update doesn’t fully change the narrative, nor does it absolve what’s been brought to light against him. But this piece isn’t about that.

This is the second part of last week’s post. My journalism story began towards the end of my career in psychology when I was writing for a local town newspaper called New Brunswick Today. I didn’t cover that much during my time there, but I did go out to cover a few events and interviewed some artistic people. The reason I stopped was because I was asked to write about the unveiling of a new town statue of Colonel John Neilson, a local war hero known about in town.
