The New York Mets (39-24) were a few outs away from taking three of four from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead, defensive miscues forced them to settle for a four-game split with a 6-5 loss Thursday. Despite that disappointment, the Mets were able to secure the season series over the Dodgers, which could wind up being very important down the stretch. Next up is the Colorado Rockies (12-50), who are coming off a sweep of the Miami Marlins.

Paul Blackburn‘s time with the New York Mets has been difficult. A multitude of injuries, most notably a spinal fluid leak, ended his season prematurely in 2024. Then, as Blackburn was getting ready for the 2025 season, he had to put things on pause due to an inflamed knee and the flu. After a series of rehab starts, he returned to the big leagues Monday.

If the New York Mets (34-22) are going to wind up winning the National League East, take advantage of the soft spots on the schedule will be key. So far, they are 16-12 against teams below .500 this season. In comparison, the Philadelphia Phillies, who they are trying to catch, are 23-8 against teams below .500. The Mets will look to improve that against the Colorado Rockies (9-47), who own the worst record in baseball by a significant margin. They are scoring a league-worst 3.16 runs per game.

For the first time this season, the New York Mets (30-20) have endured a rough stretch. Back-to-back series defeats at the hands of the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox have dropped them to second place in the National League East. The offense has really dried up, scoring 1.87 runs per game over their last eight. However, they were able to muster up five runs in their lone win against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

This edition of the Subway Series is going to be special. I can’t think of one in the regular season that has garnered this much buzz and anticipation. Juan Soto is set to make his return to The Bronx as a member of the New York Mets (28-16), who own a 2 1/2-game lead atop the NL East. So far, the New York Yankees (25-18) have looked just fine without the superstar outfielder.
