4 DISCUSSION In this paper, we described a method allowing to translate historical meta-analysis data into a prior distribution for the heterogeneity parameter in a subsequent meta-analysis. The approach may serve to quantify plausible ranges for a heterogeneity parameter, or simply as a cross-check whether some given prior specification appears to be over-optimistic or too conservative relative to historical data.
