CUMBERLAND Building Society celebrated its 175th anniversary last week with cake and a special birthday card. The building society, which has branches in Dumfries, Annan and Lockerbie, is one of the oldest still in existence, and has served local communities since it was formed on April 16 1850. Provost Maureen Johnstone was among the first to join the celebration at the High Street branch in Dumfries, and to sign a card wishing The Cumberland a happy 175th birthday.

A DUMFRIES dental clinic has invested £50,000 into a new state-of-the-art scanner. The new dental cone beam CT scanner is now in situ at Dumfries Dental Clinic and Implant Centre, which is parts of Scottish Dental Care. It delivers precise imaging for dental implants, restorative work, and oral surgery, significantly improving treatment planning and patient outcomes.

CALLS to deploy the army to install a temporary bridge in Kirkcudbright have been rebuffed after the Scotland Office claimed it was ‘powerless to act’. Dumfries and Galloway MP John Cooper has written to First Minister John Swinney asking him to contact the Scotland Office about the use of the Royal Engineers, the Army’s bridging experts, at Kirkcudbright, as the town has been cut in half since the closure of the bridge last month.

ONE year on from taking on the Loreburn Hall, Sandy Sweetman and Simon Robertson have been reflecting on the highs and lows on their journey so far. Both men were full of enthusiasm and excitement about the potential of the venue, but more than anything they wanted the community to get behind their venture and for it to become a cultural hub in the centre of Dumfries.

This exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of King’s birth with one of the most comprehensive displays of her work for 50 years. Over her career King disproved the saying ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ by mastering many approaches to art and craft. Throughout her life she intuitively created unique designs where she did not literally translate the real world.
