Birthday celebrations for the Cumberland

CUMBERLAND Building Society celebrated its 175th anniversary last week with cake and a special birthday card. The building society, which has branches in Dumfries, Annan and Lockerbie, is one of the oldest still in existence, and has served local communities since it was formed on April 16 1850. Provost Maureen Johnstone was among the first to join the celebration at the High Street branch in Dumfries, and to sign a card wishing The Cumberland a happy 175th birthday.

A DUMFRIES dental clinic has invested £50,000 into a new state-of-the-art scanner. The new dental cone beam CT scanner is now in situ at Dumfries Dental Clinic and Implant Centre, which is parts of Scottish Dental Care. It delivers precise imaging for dental implants, restorative work, and oral surgery, significantly improving treatment planning and patient outcomes.
Army bridge help calls repeated

CALLS to deploy the army to install a temporary bridge in Kirkcudbright have been rebuffed after the Scotland Office claimed it was ‘powerless to act’. Dumfries and Galloway MP John Cooper has written to First Minister John Swinney asking him to contact the Scotland Office about the use of the Royal Engineers, the Army’s bridging experts, at Kirkcudbright, as the town has been cut in half since the closure of the bridge last month.

WORKS by renowned ‘Glasgow Girl’ artist Jessie M King are now on display at Kirkcudbright Galleries. This exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of King’s birth with one of the most comprehensive displays of her work for 50 years. Over her career King disproved the saying ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ by mastering many approaches to art and craft. Throughout her life she intuitively created unique designs where she did not literally translate the real world.
Town sends clear message to dog owners

OVER 20 new bag dispensers have been installed around Moffat, as part of a new campaign against dog fouling. It is initiated by the Moffat Town Centre Map Group, led by Roy Anderton-Tyers, and supported by the Moffat and District Community Council and the Town Hall Redevelopment Trust. The 26 new poo bag dispensers have been made by Moffat Men’s Shed and have been placed at locations popular with dog walkers, including parks, core paths and other open spaces.

Summer date for Spitfire move

MOFFAT’S Spitfire is coming into land at Dowding House this summer. The life size replica of a PT 462 Spitfire, which currently sits in the garden of Dr Hamish MacLeod, has been given the go-ahead to be moved to the grounds of Dowding House, as a tribute to Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding, who was born in Moffat and served as a commander during the Battle of Britain. The team behind the project has been working with neighbours and the Royal Air Force Association on the project since 2022.
MSP to meet business over potential job losses

AN URGENT meeting between Ascensos in Stranraer and one of the area’s MSPs will take place in the coming days, after it was revealed that employees are at risk of redundancy. As many as 23 employees at the customer services outsourcing firm are at risk of losing their jobs. It was in 2021 that the Motherwell-based firm opened the ‘community-focused’ hub in the town, which works with brands such as B&Q, KFC and Peloton, as part of a £1 million investment.
