A key component of Cairns' waste management system has been destroyed by fire. The Bedminster factory diverts about half of the kerbside waste collected into compost. All waste must be diverted to landfill until the factory can be rebuilt. Hundreds of tonnes of organic waste will be dumped in landfill after a massive fire ripped through a Cairns factory, throwing the city's green waste plans into disarray.
