In September 2023, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) launched Bluetooth NLC, specifications defining roles and responsibilities for common lighting control devices installed in a Bluetooth wireless network. Bluetooth NLC builds on prior Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) and Bluetooth Mesh wireless standards to provide full-stack standardization for how devices communicate and operate within a wireless mesh network.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Building Technologies Office recently opened the third phase of its revamped L-Prize lighting competition. The Manufacturing & Installation Phase will take place over 16 months, in which participants will develop and install new interoperable lighting products that meet the program’s technical requirements.

It’s been about 8 months since Signify’s CEO pledged action to perk up sales of the Hue smart lighting line. While no big push has emerged, the company has taken a couple of smaller steps. Most recently, it strengthened ties with Samsung to sync room lighting with home televisions. Seoul-based Samsung is now embedding Signify’s Philips Hue Sync TV app in its own SmartThings mobile app.

Call it Act 2 of Crops in Space. NASA, which has been growing plants under LED lights for years on the International Space Station, is now planning to do the same on the Moon. The space agency has tapped Boulder, Colo.’s Space Lab technologies to lead the development of an indoor growth chamber — akin to a small vertical farm — that astronauts will use to grow three crops on the moon under LEDs, as part of the Artemis III mission.

A spate of recent announcements about new horticultural LED lighting deals backs up the notion that the sector’s slump could indeed be easing, as both Sollum Technologies and Signify have been busy with new commercial projects. Since early February, the two companies between them have announced at least six deals, with Montreal-based Sollum responsible for four of those.
