Family can teach you a lot of things. For sisters Cheryl and Sarah Hinman, family has taught them the joy in creating together, the insight gained from having someone there to bounce ideas off, and the value of sharing creative skills and resources. The artistic duo are the minds behind the design studio Gingergold, originally a product-based studio started in 2020.

I grew up in Indianapolis. It’s the city that raised me and held me during a turning point in my life, it’s the place where I met friends who are now family. It’s the place that first showed me what is possible when artists come together and create something experimental and radical for the community and, perhaps more importantly, for themselves. As a teenager, I saw my best friend’s sister, Nicole Atkins, host crowded and lively exhibition openings in her gallery-cum-hair salon, Alchemy.

To schedule our interview, oral historian Rae Garringer once again needed to use their phone as a hotspot. The day before, Hurricane Helene had ravaged the Florida coast, bringing with it flooding across central Appalachia and internet and power outages to Garringer’s home in southeastern West Virginia. On the day we spoke, their power restored and their family safe, they shared an hour of their time with me before transporting supplies to southern Virginia, which had been hit harder by the storm.

What impact has the surreal (or the work of the Surrealists) had on your artwork? When I was six years old one of my first art memories was going to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on a school trip and my art teacher pointing out various pieces to me, including a Salvador Dali painting. She pointed to it and said, “Look, that painting is called ‘Soft Construction with Boiled Beans’,” and right as she said "boiled beans" I looked at the beans at the bottom of the painting.
