This week several hospitals declared criticial incidents due to winter pressures. The pressure in December was mainly due a very large flu wave, which has - thankfully - just peaked. While there might be a second peak (as there was last year), hopefully there will now be a rapid decline in flu infections, although hospital capacity will remain under severe pressure for a few weeks yet.

UKHSA has reverted to publishing its surveillance report weekly, which includes admission rates to hospital for Covid, Flu and RSV. The latest data, up to 21 October 2024, shows that the most recent Covid wave is definitely on its way down - welcome news, given it came only a month or two after the significant summer Covid wave.

The BBC ran an article today with this headline:and it made my blood boil. The solution is NOT to force girls in pain to attend school. The solution is to do something about their pain so they don't lose days every month. I’ve been working (slowly) with colleagues at the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine and the Health Foundation on a project looking at common - but debilitating - problems with periods for a couple of years.

Another Covid wave has hit England, with recorded hospital admissions with Covid increasingly sharply over the last two weeks. While there has been lots written about the new subvariant XEC, it’s not nearly prevalent enough (yet) in England to be behind this wave. Instead, I think this is being driven by return to education and work combined with a cold and wet September.
