1. IntroductionKidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage kidney disease and is the most common type of organ transplant, with over 25,000 kidney transplants performed in the US in 2022 [1,2]. When the first successful human-to-human transplant was performed in 1954, there was no knowledge of HLA types, and the transplant was successful only because it was performed on identical twins [3,4].
