My children take risks, and that’s all right with me. Risky play, or what we lovingly call danger play in our house, is an incredibly important part of childhood. While it can be difficult for a parent to watch, the thrill of it allows children to feel excited by their accomplishments and challenged by the process. Plus, they learn how to be confident and healthy problem-solvers.

Hacked. Though the term seems somewhat harsh, even aggressive with little attention to detail, much of the care with our family has involved several life hacks that have made life easier for our girls. Living with a disability or a specific physical challenge in a world created for the able-bodied requires resourceful solutions.

Skip to content This summer was rough for my family. We gathered up all of our belongings and moved to a new province, leaving our friends, our communities, and the ocean air behind us. Not surprisingly, our children are extra emotional, and, if I’m being truthful, my spouse and I are also more emotional than usual.

Justice, reconciliation and building relationships were at the heart of the Christian Reformed Church’s (CRC) Canadian National Gathering held in Ottawa in May. The four-day conference was an opportunity to hear from Christian indigenous leaders and elders who shared their stories and challenged the largely white audience to sit, listen and learn.

Safe space has become a buzzword. It is unfortunate that this important concept has become a slogan with so many different meanings that it is often meaningless. Like the cheapened cries for freedom, calls for safe space raise questions such as: safe for whom? Safe for what? What do you mean by safety? Labelling a place or an event unsafe is sometimes used as a weapon against an opponent to avoid addressing substantive issues. Safe space has become another front line of the culture wars.
