Despite the common assumption that educators sit around all summer eating bonbons and sipping icy beverages, we know the truth: Many continue planning, professional development, and other school-related work over the summer. Others work on advanced degrees and certificates. Some even get side hustles to help make ends meet. I know that was true for me!When I was a new teacher, I would launch myself from the frenzy of the end of the year into tons of summer plans.

We often think about books as a way to unplug from our digital lives, and that's a great reason to read. But the lines between online and "irl" are increasingly blurred, so it only makes sense that some books wrap their stories around devices and digital media. And what better way to get some perspective and reflect on digital citizenship topics than to approach them in the steadily-paced pages of a great book?

A social media app called Wizz that’s been popular with teens in the U.S. and Canada over the last few years is pushing back against allegations that the platform allows predators to target young users for "sextortion."The app, which describes itself as "a safe space to meet and chat with new friends around the world," reportedly has a core user base of 13- to 21-year-olds and aims to build "connections" among those users.

Right around winter break, everyone's thoughts start to turn to the upcoming time off and family celebrations. In school, little kids are tracing their hands to make turkeys, while older students might be taking final exams. No matter what's on the schedule, it's a great opportunity to make a little space for some social and emotional learning that leans into the spirit of the season rather than skating across the surface.
