Manulife (MFC-T) president and CEO Roy Gori has announced he will retire effective May 8, 2025, to be succeeded by Phil Witherington. Gori has been with the financial services company since 2017. After he steps down, Gori will serve as an advisor through Aug. 31 to support the transition. “Roy is an inspiring, values-driven leader who has transformed the company and delivered outstanding results over his tenure,” Don Lindsay, chair of the board of Manulife, said in the announcement.

In the latest chapter during a year of upheaval, financially troubled Slate Office REIT (SOT.UN-T) has a new chair of its board of trustees, with George Armoyan taking over from Sam Altman, and Shant Poladian also joining the board of a trust he knows well. Armoyan steps into the chair’s role from his previous position as trustee. Poladian, who was the CEO of FAM REIT (the predecessor to Slate Office REIT) moves onto the board into Altman’s former seat as Altman also resigns as a trustee.

TAS acquired a 290,000-square-foot industrial building at 1500 Birchmount Rd. in Scarborough, Ont. in a receivership sale in October, but the site will offer more than what are generally considered industrial uses when it’s ready for new tenants late next summer. Ernst & Young (EY) was the receiver for the building and its 21.1-acre site, which TAS had been tracking for quite a while, chief investment officer Khan Tran told RENX.

Mario Barrafato will retire in the New Year as chief financial officer at Choice Properties REIT (CHP.UN-T), to be succeeded by Erin Johnston, the trust's current senior vice-president of finance. The move is effective March 1, 2025. Barrafato worked at Molson Inc. and KPMG earlier in his career before joining Dream Office REIT, where he later became CFO.

Crestpoint Real Estate Investments Ltd. has revamped its office building at 121 King St. W. in downtown Toronto and renamed it Roserock Place in an effort to give it more of an identity. The 40-year-old, 25-storey, 540,000-square-foot building was acquired by Crestpoint and an institutional partner for just under $380 million in 2022, Crestpoint executive vice-president and head of asset management Max Rosenfeld told RENX.

PCL announced Friday Chris Gower has been appointed the ninth president and CEO of the firm in its 118-year history, taking over from Dave Filipchuk who led the company for the past eight years. Gower brings nearly three decades of experience with PCL to his new role. He was previously deputy CEO, and before that was chief operating officer, overseeing PCL's building operations in Canada, the United States and Australia.

Harrison Street and its partner Gracorp Properties are launching the development of a 645-unit student and working professional housing project in Calgary’s University District, its third investment in the neighbourhood. Named Block 22, ground has just been broken at the site and completion of the 12-storey building is scheduled for August 2027, in time for the start of the 2027-28 academic year.

Ivan Limpright has been appointed chair of both Concert Properties and Concert Infrastructure Fund. He replaces David Podmore, who retired at the end of September but will serve as chair emeritus in an advisory role to both boards. “I’m delighted to see Ivan assume the role of chair. I’m confident that his enthusiastic, proactive approach will greatly benefit both companies as they continue to grow and evolve,” Podmore said in a released statement.
