Keystone College officially merged with a nonprofit aimed at boosting higher education, a move officials at the financially struggling institution touted as a positive development. College officials announced Monday the merger transaction with the Washington Institute for Education and Research, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit formed to further and support higher education. The merger was completed Friday afternoon, officials said in a news release issued Monday.

Officials at the Newton Recreation Center hope a grant will allow them to improve the growing facility. The township supervisors agreed last week to apply for the state Greenway, Trails and Recreation Program grant on behalf of the center on Newton Ransom Boulevard. The money would be used to repave and add spaces to the parking lot, renovate the outside basketball court and add exercise equipment to the trail on the grounds, board Chair Terry Purcell said.

For the first time in four years, the William W. Scranton Pool Complex at Lackawanna State Park will be filled with the sounds of people swimming and splashing. The swimming pool and splash pad at the park in North Abington Twp. opened to the public for the season Saturday with a new hard plaster base. It’s the first time since 2021 the complex is open to the public. A shortage of lifeguards forced park officials to close it in the summer of 2022.

Old Forge School District officials will look into solar power for the district thanks to funding from a state grant. The district received $400,000 through the Solar for Schools program, state Sen. Marty Flynn, D-22, Dunmore, announced this week. The money will be used to support the installation of solar energy infrastructure at the district, his office said in a news release. Flynn added it will help reduce long-term energy costs and promote sustainability in school operations.
